A Cry of Dereliction

Lamentation and Resurrection in the Gospels

The video linked here, entitled, A Cry of Dereliction: Lamentation and Resurrection in the Gospels, was part of a Lenten series of presentations given at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Birmingham, Alabama, on Sunday March 13, 2022. This 35-minute lecture explores Jesus’ cry of dereliction “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mk 15:34; cf. Mt 27:46) as the basis for a Christian understanding of Lamentation by which Christ is at once the voice of humanity crying out to God in our suffering, even as he simultaneously embodies God’s response in the Resurrection.
